General information

The Diploma of Advanced Tax is aimed at developing high-level planning and advisory skills for tax practitioners with a minimum of five years experience.

Advanced Tax is a hands-on practical course, providing you with the opportunity to take advantage of in-depth practitioner interaction and analysis of varied technical challenges in a number of specialist areas.

This course is for those who wish to develop to the next level from complex compliance work. Advanced Tax does not teach tax law but through six complex practical tax case studies led by top tax professionals, you develop high-level practical skills and confidence in dealing with client scenarios.

Entry requirements

To ensure this course is right for you, you must apply to enrol in Advanced Tax and have a minimum of five years experience in Australian taxation, accounting or law. Your application will need to demonstrate a sound knowledge of Australian tax law and be supported by a professional referee.

If you are not already a Member of the Taxation Institute you will also be required to apply for the relevant category of Membership to be accepted in the course.

What you will learn

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • determine and evaluate alternative available tax strategies
  • interview clients with more complicated tax issues and prepare associated working papers to instruct staff on the preparation of individual, partnership, trust, not-for-profit, superannuation fund and company returns
  • advise on a range of complex high-net-worth individual, partnership, trust, superannuation fund, business and company issues
  • maintain vigilance on non-tax issues that could impact clients, including assurance, financial reporting and business planning issues
  • integrate the impact of risk and assurance, ethics, corporate governance and commercial issues of a corporation and advise corporate tax clients on a full range of tax issues
  • take your place as a member of a practice management team and proactively devise and implement practice management.

Learning resources

Upon course commencement you will receive a set of study materials which are referred to throughout the course and will continue to be a constant reference after the course. In addition to the study materials, electronic copies of suggested solutions, handouts, presentations and assessment resources are available for download from the secure candidate section of the website.

Materials are reviewed at each offering and are updated to reflect the current work tasks that candidates face on a day-to-day basis.

During the course you will also have access to the Course Convenor who provides email support on technical queries.

Face-to-face lecture mode

  • 3 hours x 6 face-to-face case study sessions
  • 2 hours x 6 preparing solutions for discussion of each case study
  • Assignment 25 hours
  • 2 hours viva voce
  • Recommend 6 hours per case study of private study
  • Total approximately 93 hours

Distance mode

  • 2 hours x 6 web/teleconference tutorials
  • 2 hours x 6 preparing solutions for discussion of each case study
  • Assignment 25 hours
  • 2 hours viva voce
  • Recommend 7 hours per case study of private study
  • Total approximately 93 hours

All candidates will also be expected to devote appropriate time to research the assignment and viva voce.

The Taxation Institute has established recognition with selected universities and professional associations for its courses.

  • credit for the income tax unit Taxation Advanced 569 from the Curtin University, School of Business and Law:
  • Master of Taxation
  • Master of Commerce (Taxation).

Law Society of NSW

Graduates of Advanced Tax, who also meet the entry criteria for the Law Society of NSW Specialist Accreditation Program in the practice area of Business & Personal Taxation Law:

  • will automatically satisfy the written examination component of the Specialist Accreditation Program; and
  • may also satisfy one or more of the questions in the mock file (at the discretion of the advisory committ for Business and Personal Taxation Law)

Graduates of Advanced Tax also meet the education entry requirements to apply for Fellow Membership of the Taxation Institute.

CPD recognition

Progression and completion

Upon successful completion of Advanced Tax, candidates will receive a certificate of completion and are invited to attend their local state graduation ceremony.

Employers are also invited to attend the ceremony with their graduands. Graduation ceremonies are scheduled by your local State Office.

After completion of Advanced Tax there are also a number of opportunities offered by the Institute to continue your learning and development throughout your career. The Taxation Institute offers a range of CPD seminars and events and a number of resourceful tax publications.

Upon successful completion of Advanced Tax as well as other undergraduate qualifications and/or experience candidates meet education entry requirements for Fellow Membership of the Taxation Institute and may be eligible to apply subject to meeting all conditions.

Candidates can also contact their local state office to find out ways to become more involved with the activities of the Taxation Institute.
