Choosing a course

The Tax Institute offers three courses from The Tax Education Program. Each course is designed to assist your learning and development at various stages throughout your career. The courses offered are:

CTA 1 Foundations

  • Overseas professionals looking for a bridging course into Australian tax

A practical compliance tax course that will give you the working knowledge and skills you need to get started in the profession

Graduates will:
  • gain one (elective) subject exemption in Bachelor of Taxation at the Australian School of Taxation (Atax) at the University of New South Wales.
  • meet the requirements to apply for Affiliate Membership of The Tax Institute

For information on completing this course to contribute to the two-semester 'Course in Australian taxation law' or 'Interim Course in basic GST/BAS taxation principles' as approved by the Tax Practitioners Board to register as a tax agent (conditions apply), click here


CTA 2 Advanced 
  • post-degree with 12 months Australian tax experience
  • working at an intermediate level
  • applicants wanting to gain exemptions for the tax module from ICCA and CPA

Confidently handle complex tax related issues and undertake supervisory tasks.
Graduates will:
  • gain exemption for the Chartered Accountants Program Tax Module from the ICCA
  • gain exemption from the Taxation segment of the CPA Australia Program.
  • gain six units of credit for one of the following postgraduate taxation programs offered by UNSW School of Taxation (Atax):
    • Graduate Diploma in Advanced Taxation
    • Master of Taxation
    • Master of International Taxation
  • gain credit for the capstone income tax unit Taxation 531 in the Curtin University, School of Business and Law in:
    • Graduate Certificate in Taxation
    • Postgraduate Diploma of Commerce (Taxation)
  • meet the education requirements for Associate Membership of The Tax Institute.

CTA 3 -Advisory dvanced
  • post-degree with 3 years Australian tax experience
  • working at a management/ supervisory level
  • ready to enter the tax advisor/planner stage of their careers
  • applicants wanting to become a CTA
Builds from your tax law knowledge and develops high-level practical skills and confidence in dealing with complex real life tax advice.
Graduates will:
  • gain credit for the income tax unit Taxation Advanced 569 in the Curtin University, School of Business and Law:
    • Master of Taxation
    • Master of Commerce (Taxation)
  • satisfy the education requirements for Fellow Membership of the Taxation Institute, combined with other qualifications.
