About the Program
Since 1943, The Tax Institute has been providing the profession with leading-edge tax education, information and support. The Tax Institute is renowned as Australia's premier provider of tax education, with the Institute's Tax Education Program as the preferred choice of practical training by the Australian taxation profession. The Institute developed The Tax Education Program to enhance the performance of all tax professionals by providing the vital link between academic studies and workplace practice.
The Program consists of three courses covering undergraduate and postgraduate levels and caters for tax professionals from the new entrant to the experienced and career-minded tax practitioner.
Graduates of these courses demonstrate the highest level of expertise in their field due to their success in the challenging exams and their ability to meet high standards.
Leading industry practitioners and academics have collaborated in the development of the Institute's Education courses. The modules have been prepared by tax industry authors and tertiary educators, and the course material is monitored and reviewed for each intake by expert practitioners in relevant fields.
Study is flexible with The Tax Education Program
The Institute offers courses to suit all levels of tax professionals - from the new entrant to the experienced tax practitioner. The courses progressively build on each other so candidates can step in or up to the level you need, at the time that you need it. Intervals are built into the Program so that you are able to complete other credentials and professional education, and practise what you have just learnt in your workplace.

Course flexibility
You can enrol at any level of the program and you do not have to undertake each course. If you successfully complete the course level of your choice, you will then obtain a certificate of completion and together with other qualifications will have completed the educational requirements to enter the corresponding Membership level of The Tax Institute.
Note: Advanced Tax graduates will also need to complete the relevant number of years of experience in tax in addition to their educational attainment to apply for Fellow membership.
Blended learning
We recognise the importance of lifelong learning in the professional development of busy tax professionals. Consequently, we have structured the Education Program to accommodate the many demands placed on your work life. In addition to the face-to-face components, the program has blended the opportunities of:
- Out-of-class study materials
- Suggestions for workplace application
- Online learning resources
- Peer/candidate interactions
- Access to relevant materials online so that any late-breaking material can be provided just in time.
The authors of the learning resources have developed their material to ensure that candidates are able to work through the topics with the assistance of lecturers and Course Convenor and the use of case studies for analysis. The materials also aim to enable candidates to draw on assessment questions, review questions and other teaching and learning strategies, as well as current and past industry experience in tax.
Constant access to assistance
To assist candidates in understanding the technical content of the study material, Course Convenors are appointed for each course of The Tax Education Program. Candidates can contact the Course Convenor by email for assistance or for clarification on difficult concepts.
Highest industry recognition
The Tax Education Program conforms with best practice professional education standards. The Tax Institute developed The Tax Education Program in 2005. Graduates of each level are eligible to apply for continued membership. From 1 July 2006, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements must be met with the Tax Institute. Each course provides the annual Tax Institute CPD requirement.
The Program is governed by two boards to ensure that the highest standards are adhered to:
Education, Examination and Quality Assurance Board reviews the resources to ensure the courses continue to reflect the current tax planning environment. This Board is made up of representatives of leading practitioner bodies and tax academics, who have responsibility for the learning materials and resources and the assessment.
The Education Advisory Board represents employers in the tax profession by providing advice on the skills and knowledge that their practices require and the skill sets that make a candidate an attractive employment prospect.
